The creation of a limited edition calendar
Calendars are my weakness. I buy them, use them, collect them, almost eat them. Since I started printing, my first solo project was a very simple desktop calendar: I made it using vintage images and packed it in a CD case to be used as a stand. I sold them at school bazaars in Miami and gave them as presents to my whole family. I also ventured into a coasters calendar, but without much success... The following year I designed and printed another desktop calendar, this time using my illustrated girl Gigi. And years passed by, and more calendars were printed and sold (or given away to family and friends).
However, this year I put a bit more effort into creating a limited edition version. I documented part of the making process through pictures that I am sharing here with you.
By the way, calendars make an excellent gift for teachers during Holidays.
The first step was all the screen printing on the wood panels, using three new illustrations of Gigi on three different colors.
Then we assembled each wood panel with a vintage brass clip and golden screws (for this stage I counted with the most valuable help: my Dad.)
And then came the printing part. All pages have a different pattern in matte gold foil, and months and days were printed using black ink letterpress. I chose Savoy #118 cotton paper, which I think prints excellent using both foil and letterpress.
The calendars are numbered from 1 to 50. It's a limited edition. To hold the calendar vertical, we (my Dad and I) cut by hand little sticks of wood that go inserted into a hole in the back of the wood panel.
And voila!
You can purchase them on my Etsy shop... Hurry up!
